The TRUE project, in collaboration with the Institute for International Legal and Advocacy Training (IILAT) and the Inner Temple, will hold a two-day specialised Advanced Advocacy Course on Open Source Evidence which will take place in the International Criminal Court in The Hague on 14 and 15 September 2024. The training is designed for advocates working for the Prosecution, Defence and Victims Legal Representative teams before international criminal tribunals. The trainers are leading advocates and judges from the UK and ICC judge and TRUE Advisory Board member Judge Joanna Korner.
Following some plenary sessions on expert evidence and the particular advocacy strategies and challenges of open source/user-generated evidence, participants will practice the skills of conducting a conference with an expert witness; case analysis and examination-in-chief and cross-examination, using a fictional case study. Fictional expert reports were produced in collaboration with experts from Bellingcat, the Global Legal Action Network, and the Starling Lab at Stanford University.
There are only 18 places available on this training course. The organising team is aiming to have a balanced representation of prosecution and defence advocates and victims counsel practising at the international or national level. The deadline for applications is 25 August 2024, and the selected participants will be notified by 28 August 2024. The training is intended for senior advocates with at least 5 years of advocacy experience. The training is free of charge (though participants will have to fund their own accommodation and travel to The Hague, where required).
